May 29, 2005 "Life Together"
Speaker Jackie Rose

You Have Found the Prime Timers Adult Bible Fellowship Web Page. Welcome!

You are invited for fellowship, coffee, donuts and enlightenment in Rooms 210-212 of the Payne Education Center every Sunday from 10:00am to 10:45am! The Prime Timers is a group in the Prime of Life, maybe this is you. Whatever, we hope to see you there.

We have been privileged to have lectures on Paul's letters to the Galatians from Dr. Bill Moore during this month. Jackie Rose returns as our leader and lecturer on May 29.

The Good News fund keeps growing.

At the beginning of class for $1 you can bring us news of your family, or whatever good news is on your mind.

Caroline Maryan was happy to report that her son has graduated High School.

The Rev. Rusty Goldsmith, our class mentor, gave us the latest news on his new grand-daughter, that she was to be baptized next month.

Dr. Bill Moore began his last talk for us on the letters of Paul to the Galatians with the background that, for Dr. Bill, Galatians is boring! He was making a point, of course, and this was that these letters were not written as universal wisdom but rather as letters to specific people, the Galatians. At the time the Galatians were in open revolt against Paul, rejecting him as a leader, calling him a lackluster speaker and even demanding proof that he was who he said he was.

This helps explain the tone of the reading, where Paul is having to deal with the challenges from the people and the Judaizers, the Christian sect that still followed the Jewish Law. He is somewhat frustrated and you could even say he loses his temper!

In the concluding part of the lesson Dr. Moore had us re-read the passage from Galatians verse by verse, after which he provided further explanations from St. Jerome's Commentary.

The Lesson for Sunday, May 29 is titled "Life Together"

Key Verses:  Galatians 6:2

Focus of the Lesson:  Most people long for respect and kindness, but not everyone is willing to extend such treatment to others. Is there some way we can develop the art of respect for others? Paul says that God's Spirit can fill us with the attitudes we should have.

The reading is Romans Galatians 5:22-6:10 This text is from the New Revised Standard Version.

22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, competing against one another, envying one another.

Galatians 6:1-10

1 My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if those who are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. 4 All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor’s work, will become a cause for pride. 5 For all must carry their own loads. 6 Those who are taught the word must share in all good things with their teacher. 7 Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for you reap whatever you sow. 8 If you sow to your own flesh, you will reap corruption from the flesh; but if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life from the Spirit. 9 So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest-time, if we do not give up. 10 So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.
