Prime Timers is a Christian Education group at St. Martin's for Episcopalians aged fifty and above. We are following a course of study based on the Revised Common Lectionary, the three year cycle of Bible readings used throughout the Anglican Communion and by many Protestant denominations worldwide. Prime Timer Good News!

A Prime Timer tradition is hearing what others are up to, and charging a dollar for the privilege! Currently we donate the money we collect to the Amistad Mission in Bolivia, helping underprivileged kids.

In Wind and Fire

George Laigle led the Prime Times today while our leader Carol Hartland is away. This is Pentecost Sunday and our readings concern the day the Holy Spirit is breathed on the disciples, and by inference on us. This is the famous "tongues of fire" scene where diverse peoples begin talking to each other, and everyone understands the other in their own language. George remembers going to hear a minister who spoke in tongues and came away unimpressed. George makes the point that in the Bible everyone understood each other, where the people he saw who "spoke in tongues" pretty much just babbled incoherently!

Marty treats this event metaphorically, and how nice it would be if everyone could talk and understand each other! George points out how the reading from Acts has the Holy Spirit being given on Pentecost, fifty days after Passover, while John has Jesus bestowing the Holy Spirit on the day of the Resurrection. John's gospel emphasizes forgiveness in Jesus' words. (John 20:22-23) "Receive the Holy Spirit. ²³If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." You can't sort of forgive someone! It is the responsibility of the church community to forgive people who show repentance and faith!

From our class notes Father Joseph Diele, Pastor at the Church for All People in Brooklyn, New York for over twenty five years, wrote in God’s Name Is Love:

“We must be prepared for the encounter [with God], being certain, however, that God will always bring us something new. God is a novelty. And when I see a Church that fears novelty, I cannot but smile. The Church’s remaining on its feet does not depend on our personal behavior. The Church stands on its feet
because it has the Spirit.”

Genesis 1:1--2:4a

¹In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, ²the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. ³Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. ⁴And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. ⁵God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

Genesis 2

Matthew 28:16-20
